Cats!

On Saturday I went to see Cats. It was good, I really enjoyed it.

What made it really great was I went with my wonderful friend (Hey, coffee soon!) and her two wonderful daughters. I don’t get the chance to see her daughters a lot but I do enjoy hearing about them. It can be hard to figure out how to have a connection to your friends children. I don’t want to be their friend but they’re Mom is an important person in my life and therefore they are important to me as well and I would at least like them to know who I am.

I started sending them postcards when I travel because kids love postcards. They went to Hawaii earlier this year and they in turn sent me a postcard. It’s something that’s really easy to do and gives us a connection without being intrusive.

Going to see Cats was a surprise for them, their Mom hadn’t told them where they were going only that they were meeting up with me. Passing a sign for Cats, they’re Mom asked “Would you like to see that?” They both responded “Yes!” That’s when they’re Mom said “Good because that’s where we’re going!”

It was great to see them in person. We all went to dinner first and the girls were wonderful. Having fun, doing the puzzle on the children’s menu and playing with little animals that came with their drinks. It was a lovely dinner and then we headed to the theatre.

The show is over two hours with the intermission and the girls were completely engaged the whole time. One may have found her calling she was completely in awe of the performers. Leaving they collected some of the silver confetti that had fallen over the theatre at the end of the show. A reminder of how easy it is to make a young girl happy. Confetti never fails. Clutching the programs and smiling they talked about the show. I’m so glad that I went with them and maybe we’ll end up at another show together in the future.

It’s another connection to them and now I can be that lady who sends them postcards and went to Cats with them. Which is all good with me.

Food At The Monastery

One of many great things about staying at the the monastery in Prague was The Strahov Monastic Brewery. There is good beer, heaters outside to keep you warm and made for a nice place close to the hotel to end our evenings. Also the food was really good, especially the desserts.

I still dream of the chocolate and caramel beer ice cream:

AND not just deep fried cheese but deep fried camembert! It was so good:

This was my favourite a pancake with caramel beer ice cream, honey and nuts:

All the food looked really good and when I find myself in Prague again I will definitely go back!

Dinner At Notable

I recently had dinner with good friends at Notable on Bowness road in Calgary. It was really good. It has a friendly atmosphere, our waitress was wonderful (whose name I don’t remember because I’m a bad person). We had a big booth and although we had to wait a bit even though we had a reservation it was well worth it.

I love these glass insulators hanging from the ceiling:

First the appetizers this is

Crispy potato rolls, rotisserie pork, Jalapeño Jack cheese 11 spicy Ranch dip, salsa verde, everybody at the table liked these and there was a fight for the last one:

Lobster & leek risotto, butter poached lobster claw, lobster foam, Asiago cheese 19, the risotto was SO GOOD! I will be having it again:

This was a lamb burger and apparently was really good!

This was Lamb with homemade sausage it got the thumbs up and also inspired a lot of inappropriate jokes when it arrived at the table:

Double-smoked bacon wrapped Pacific swordfish 36 peppercorn sauce, chick pea “fries”, the swordfish got the thumbs up but the chick pea fries were the only item that anybody thought were not great, not a lot of flavour:

I had the Seared East Coast scallops, grilled romaine hearts, bacon & caper dressing but the picture didn’t turn out, which is a shame because it was REALLY good!

Then dessert, everybody had the same caramelized pineapple with pineapple sorbet and a coconut cream donut. We all loved it, the donut with the pineapple was so good and not too heavy or sweet:

At the end we all agreed we would come back as there is so much more on the menu that we want to try. They also change the menu for seasonal specials. Definitely a thumbs up for Notable!

Thai Food At The Clarendon

My first night in London we arrived hungry and tired. My friend had worked all day and so both of us wanted something quick. Becca who loves good food suggested we go to the Clarendon for Thai food and it was really good. It used to be called The Nobody Inn but has changed it’s name to the Clarendon. I like The Nobody Inn more but the food was still really good.

We started with shrimp toast (VERY tastey!):

Then had the battered mushrooms:

Then I had the Thai Green Curry with prawns:

All the food was really good and just what I wanted after a long travel day. Also pretty reasonably priced. The service was great and the food came out fast and hot. I look forward to going again and trying more of the menu.

Clarendon is in Islington, 92 Mildmay Park, London

MAPLE BACON DONUTS

It was a busy morning and I was running late.

But I a good excuse. I really did. Did you see the name of this post?

MAPLE BACON DONUTS

When I heard there were not only donuts but ….

MAPLE  BACON DONUTS

I thought “That sounds disgusting” …. so I HAD to have one.

Then I ate it before I could take a picture, before I thought of taking a picture. Before I had even gotten my coffee. The vultures were hanging around and if I didn’t eat it they would have, I’m sure of it.

IT WAS SO GOOD. (Joanne did you throw up a little? She’s my BFF and a vegetarian) It was from Jelly modern doughnuts on 8th street and 14 avenue in Calgary. The sweet maple icing with the salty bacon and the soft donut. Forget jelly, forget sprinkles, forget glaze …… BACON on a donut is divine.

I had heard about the mythical bacon donut but didn’t know they were available so close to home. I’m not sure this is a good thing. I will be going to get another one. Soon. Very Soon. When I do I will take a picture and share it with you. The Bacon Maple were the first to go. Vultures I tell you…..

Until I have a picture of the Maple Bacon here are some other Jelly modern doughnuts that look really good:

Pumpkin Spice and how about some Pumpkin Wine to go with it!

Peanut Butter Cup

Lemon (looks like an egg, that says “breakfast” doesn’t it?)

Marshmallow

Madagascar Bourbon Vanilla

Valrhona Chocolate

Donuts and Friday just go together, don’t you think?
