Heading to Gullfoss I felt like I was really on my way, getting into the swing of the tour and starting to bond with the group. I had chosen the Intrepid Travel ten day circle tour of Iceland because I figured, if you’re gonna go and see Iceland then you should really GO AND SEE ICELAND.
So far the tour was going great, our guide Jens was AWESOME, very organized and knowledgeable, easy going but clear on his expectations. Much of his job was counting and corralling the twelve of us on the tour.
Gullfoss is BEAUTIFUL, there was even a rainbow there to welcome us! At this point it was my favourite but by the end of the tour I would not be able to pick a favourite out of all the waterfalls (maybe George but I’ll write about George later).
Gullfoss is really two falls and the sound it makes is extraordinary.
This is a memorial to Sigridur Tomasdottir, her sisters and her used to guide tourists to Gullfoss making the first trail leading to the waterfall around 1875.
The river above is the Hvita and there is a tale of a young woman and a young man who used to live on either sides of the river. They longed for each other but the river was too strong to cross, one day the young man attempted it and made it across, they got married, had kids and blah, blah, blah ….. I know I was waiting for a more exciting ending as well.
More pictures and don’t slip!
